HONDURAS
We've partnered with the Manos Amigas eye clinic in La Entrada, Honduras since 2015, working to develop local infrastructure and expand the clinic’s capacity. VHI is committed to conducting at least one field program in Honduras each year. Through long-term partnerships with Serving at the Crossroads and Clinica Manos Amigas, VHI aims to transfer skills, knowledge, and equipment to help the clinic become self-sufficient within the next five years.

VHI Partnerships in Honduras
Manos Amigas coordinates patient screenings, logistics, and year-round follow-up care, and VHI partners with them to expand access to surgical and specialized ophthalmic services. Over the years, VHI has worked closely with Serving at the Crossroads and Clinica Manos Amigas to build capacity, providing vision care while transferring skills, knowledge, and equipment to help the clinic become self-sufficient within the next five years.
Volunteering with VHI in Honduras
Most Honduras programs are about a week long; volunteers typically fly into San Pedro Sula (SAP) and take a chartered bus to La Entrada, where they stay at the Hotel San Carlos. The first day is typically spent doing screenings and scheduling for surgical patients, and the rest of the time is spent delivering the surgery and eye clinics.
Key Facts About Vision Care in Honduras

Honduras has a population of over 10.8 million, with many rural areas lacking access to medical and surgical eye care.
-
La Entrada, in western Honduras, serves as a central hub for rural communities with extremely limited access to ophthalmic surgery.
-

Creating Sustainable Solutions
Since partnering with the Manos Amigas Clinic, VHI has supported their initial technician’s optometry education in Guatemala. The clinic has since hired an assistant and built a surgical suite with four operating rooms, waiting areas, and pre- and post-op spaces. VHI has donated or facilitated donations of key equipment, including a YAG laser, two phaco units, two Zeiss operating microscopes, phoropters, and full exam lanes. We maintain ongoing communication with clinic staff, providing consultations and guidance as needed, with the goal of helping the clinic achieve full self-sufficiency in skills and equipment.
