Key to the success of our work are our partnerships with host communities. VHI will schedule field programs only at the invitation of — and in collaborations with — local leaders, regional or national officials, or eye care or medical professionals. We plan and implement four to five, week-long service trips each year, for which we recruit dedicated vision care professionals and highly-qualified personnel to volunteer their time, in order to deliver high-quality vision care to the local community.
Upcoming Field Programs
Riobamba, Ecuador - February 2-11, 2019
VHI will partner with the Partners for Andean Community Health clinic in Riobamba to assist in training their ophthalmologist in the latest cataract surgical technique, using their newly-acquired phaco machines, which were donated through VHI. This trip will focus on capacity building and sustainability, working with eye care professionals at all levels in the clinic, so they can continue to offer high quality eye care to the region of Chimborazo.
Denver, Colorado - April 27, 2019
For the second year in a row, VHI will partner with the Stout Street Clinic in Denver, Colorado as part of our annual board meeting. Stout Street Clinic serves homeless and low-income patients. We’ll provide free, comprehensive eye exams and eyeglasses to hundreds of people in need on this special, one-day clinic in April.
La Entrada, Honduras - March 23-31, 2019
VHI has worked closely over the years with the Serving at the Crossroads and Clinica Manos Amigas in La Entrada, Honduras to build capacity and provide vision care. This is one of two annual trips to La Entrada, where we offer cataract and oculoplastic surgery, in addition to comprehensive eye exams and free eyeglasses. Our team will also help set up a newly-donated phaco machine in the clinic.
Villa Nueva, Guatemala - May 18-26, 2019
VHI will partner with the local Lions Club of Utatlan and the City of Villa Nueva for a third annual trip to provide vision care for the urban poor surrounding Guatemala City. We’ll do comprehensive eye exams, provide free eyeglasses to communities surrounding Villa Nueva, and perform pediatric strabismus surgery.
