Strabismus surgery can help improve visual acuity. Yet it is not like cataracts where vision is restored. Its stigma can make people think someone with strabismus is less competent.

VHI is delighted to be returning Ecuador. Trips wil focus on developing an ongoing comprehensive pediatric ophthalmology program. We expect to perform 50-60 adult and pediatric surgical procedures. A team will also travel to various schools to screen and evaluate 200-300 students each day.
VHI has conducted one-week field programs in Piura every year since 2005. Piura is a vibrant commercial city in the coastal/desert region of northwestern Peru.
Stories from the 2013 program highlight the great changes VHI volunteers help make in people’s lives.
In four previous field programs to the Dominican Republic and San Juan de la Maguana, VHI accomplished 1,444 eye exams, 1,099 eyeglass fittings, and 467 surgeries.
Dr. Abernethy’s work in Ecuador laid the groundwork and became the inspiration for what is now Vision Health International.
VHI has conducted two field programs to El Fuerte, an agricultural city in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.
