VHI Board Members

Randy Rottman, MD - President
Ophthalmologist. Grand Junction, Colorado

Associated with VHI since 1990. VHI has allowed me to realize my professional dream of making a difference in this world and continually reaffirms my reason for going into medicine.

Paul O'Rourke - Vice President
Writer/Historian. Golden, Colorado

Volunteer participant, with wife Melinda O’Rourke, M.D. (Ophthalmologist) since 1999. On each trip with VHI I am reminded, over and over again, what humility and gratitude means. For all the abundant and grateful appreciation we receive from those who have had their vision restored, I can’t help but think it is I who should be saying thank you.

Stephen DiFolco - Treasurer
Principal, Integrated Health Industries. Northvale, New Jersey

Affiliated with VHI since 1999. Board member since 2005. VHI performs much needed work for the blind and under-privileged in Latin America. It is important for me to contribute, as best I can, in any way I can, to that effort.

Nancy Burns, RN - Secretary
Registered Nurse. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Volunteer participant on numerous field programs since 1987. Board member since 1994. Nancy is bilingual in Spanish and English. VHI brings into focus why I chose nursing as a career. Even with modest resources we accomplish a great deal, for on just one trip, in just one week’s time, many, many lives are profoundly changed for the better.

Richard Whitten, Jr., MD - Medical Director
Ophthalmologist, Oculoplastic Surgeon. Fresno, California

Founding member and volunteer participant since 1985. After numerous VHI trips I can say, with great satisfaction, that our work has made a difference in the lives of thousands of people. My work with VHI affirms, both personally and professionally, my decision to go to medical school.

Thomas R. Bates, MD - Board Member
Ophthalmologist. Orlando, Florida

In practice since 1965, currently retired, a volunteer participant on 20 VHI trips since 1990. Being able to restore vision for those who would otherwise be blind still brings me an indescribable rush.

Matt Bolton - Board Member

Kay Whitten - Board Member
Registered Nurse. Fresno, California

Founding member, volunteer participant, Nursing Director, Equipment and Supply Director since 1985. Post-op rounds are so special. When the eye patch is removed and the patient can see her family for the first time in years, the look that comes over her face, well, it’s hard to put the emotions into words. Let’s just say, it’s why we do what we do.
