Located in the heart of Central America, Honduras is a county with a colorful ancient and Spanish colonial history. The La Entrada region is nearby ancient Mayan ruins and just over two hours from the capital Tegucigalpa. VHI just completed our maiden voyage to La Entrada on March 5-13, 2015, and the trip was a huge success. Our host organization, Serving at the Crossroads (US branch) aka Manos Amigas in Honduras, is a not-for-profit that has run a medical clinic in La Entrada for the last 10 years. The organization is close to serving the 100,000th patient visit.
Project: Our eye campaign will be the second program that Manos Amigas has hosted. The hope is our new new program will provide the La Entrada region with a partner capable of providing many more years of care. The two group program will be split with the clinic group providing cataract surgeries, while the roaming group will visit surrounding towns and villages providing basic eye care, vision screenings, and measuring for prescription glasses.
Vision Health International handles all in-country travel, lodging, and food expenses. In addition, VHI coordinates enough translators to assist our team, and will help you learn the basic medical terms in Spanish.
