Jalpatagua, Guatemala

VHI conducted two field programs to Guatemala, in 2007 to Guastatoya in the northeast section of the country, and in March 2008, to Jalpatagua, in the southeast corner of the Guatemala.

Jalpatagua is a town of 15,000 people (the regional population numbers 300,000), 13 miles on the principal highway from El Salavdor and 2½ hours south and east of the capital city.

VHI conducted clinic, dispensed eyeglasses, and performed surgery in the newly constructed Hospital San Juan Bautista. Dr. Pablo Rene Recinos Rivera, director of the hospital, the local Lions Club, and the municipal government (Mr. Edwin Reuda, Mayor) were supportive of the program and worked daily with VHI to facilitate its success.

VHI was greatly assisted in the successful completion of the field program to Jalpatagua by way of generous donations from The International Foundation and Transitions Optical’s Healthy Sight for Life Fund.

During one week in Jalpatagua, VHI volunteers provided 600 eye exams, dispensed 700 pairs of eyeglasses, and performed 119 surgeries.
